How to read FDI tooth numbers
In most of the world, including Türkiye and Europe, teeth are numbered with the two-digit system of the FDI World Dental Federation, also defined as the ISO 3950 standard.
- The first digit is the quadrant. The mouth is divided into four: 1 upper right, 2 upper left, 3 lower left and 4 lower right. Right and left are the patient’s own sides, so to someone facing the patient, the patient’s right appears on the left.
- The second digit is the tooth’s position. It counts back from the midline: 1 central incisor, 2 lateral incisor, 3 canine, 4 and 5 premolars, and 6, 7 and 8 molars. The 8s are the wisdom teeth.
- The digits are read separately. 16 is read “one-six”: the sixth tooth from the midline on the upper right, the first molar.
Baby teeth use the same logic with quadrants 5 to 8. In the United States teeth are usually numbered 1 to 32 instead, so the upper right first molar that is 16 in the FDI system is number 3 there. It is worth checking which system a dental record uses if you have had treatment abroad.
